Abstract
This Encyclopedia chapter summarizes what is known from over half a century of research on youth's out-of-school social practices connected to literacy, including the ways their texts and audiences contribute to these practices. Such insights are critical to understanding how youth across the globe draw on literacy practices to situate themselves in non-academic physical and social spaces, including using critical literacies for judging explanations offered by texts they generate and consume. Descriptions of critical literacies, texts, and audiences are followed by a discussion of needed research, practice, and policy to invite youth to shape school literacies in more relevant, equitable ways.
