“You Get What You Fucking Deserve”: Joker and the Fantasies of Refusal

Research output: Chapter in Book/Entry/PoemChapter

Abstract

This chapter examines Todd Phillips’s 2019 film Joker with a focus on the different ways the film can be interpreted. In one reading, the film depicts the delusions of a mentally ill loner who lashes out at an indifferent society with violence. In another reading, the film tells the triumphant rise of a supervillain. These divergent fantasy frames are explored with a particular focus on the ways that music is used to shift between them.
