Abstract

The technological and market issues that will impact the development of bandwidth trading markets with liquidity, are discussed. Several network topologies in which trading bandwidth would make sense both from a business perspective and a technical perspective is analyzed. Two major problems that may hamper the implementation of dynamic and fluid spot markets for bandwidth trading, are also discussed. The first problem is related to the excessive time that disseminating the new routing information generated by an agreement may take while the second problem is associated with the difficulties in performing traffic engineering to balance load across links once carrier become multi-connected.
