In the last two series, with the exception of the CN- complexes, the axial methyls resonate at higher field than the equatorial methyls. It is our contention that this must also be true of the Com(Me,[14]dieneN,) complexes whose gem-dimethyl groups give two well-separated resonances of equal intensity and for which there is no a priori method of assigning the two methyl resonances. This assignment is contrary to that reported4 by others who assigned the methyl resonances of some Com(Me, [14]dieneN4) com- plexes without justifying their assignment. N2 - A correlation has been found between the chemical shifts of the methyl groups and the ligand field strength of X in the complexes [Co(MAC)X 2]ClO4, where X = Br-, Cl-, N 3-, NCO-, SCN-, AcO-, NO2-, and CN-, and MAC is one of four methyl substituted tetradentate macrocycles.
