Abstract
Since a cyclic triaxial compression apparatus was first used to study liquefaction of saturated sandy soil, many different types of cyclic shear devices have been used to investigate drained and undrained characteristics of soils under cyclic loading conditions: the box-type simple shear device, the NGI simple shear device, the ring shear device, and the torsional simple shear device. The primary considerations in selecting a testing apparatus should be: (1) The device should closely simulate the insitu stress and strain conditions during static as well as dynamic loadings. (2) The experimental results can be analyzed without assuming critical parameters.
