Abstract

A new class of compounds of the family Ni/Cd/X/LL (X=Cl, Br, I; LL=ethylenediamine, 2,2′-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline) were prepared from mixtures of the metal halide salts, the appropriate organoamine and a source of excess halogen in hydrothermal media and have been structurally characterized. Synthesis and structural descriptions are reported for the compounds [(en)3Ni][CdBr4] (2), [(bpy)3Ni][CdCl4] (3), [(bpy)2Ni(OH2)2][CdBr4] (4), [(bpy)2NiCl2CdI2] (5), [(phen)2NiX2CdX2] (6), [((bpy)2NiCl2CdCl2)2] (7), and [(phen)2NiCl(OH2)CdCl3] (8). As suggested by the formulations the compounds are simple salts (for 2-4), heteronuclear dimetallic molecules (for 5, 6 and 8), and an unusual tetranuclear mixed metal species (for compound 7). The structure of compound 7 is unique among the structures reported here as it contains a five-coordinate Cd(II) center. The structures of compounds 2-6 and 8 exhibit six-coordinate Ni(II) centers and four-coordinate Cd(II) centers in distorted octahedral and tetrahedral geometries, respectively.
