Abstract

It is given a bird's eye view of the galactic interstellar environment, its structure and composition. It is also given a short description of some fundamental physico-chemical processes, that are important for gravitational collapse and hence for the formation of stars, for the shaping galaxies, for regulating their dynamics and in a sense for allowing the Universe to be as we observe it today.
