Abstract

Site-selected optical spectra of 2,4,6,8,10-dodecapentaenal taken at 4.2 K are presented. It is found that this compound exhibits spectral properties similar to both the retinals (hydrogen bonding is necessary for emission) and the linear polyenes (spectra characterized by a simple progression of single and double bond modes).
