Abstract
The simulation of three-dimensional vortex flows in a density-stratified fluid is based on a generalization of the Boussinesq approximation. The generalization yields a nonhomogeneous term in the continuity equation. The spectral method is applied to the corresponding Navier-Stokes relations and an algebraic system equation is solved numerically with iteration on time. The numerical evolution of vortex arrays shows the effects of the stratification, including a trend toward 2-D motion from 3-D motion and an inhibition in turbulence development.
