N2 - A significant increase in the amount of e-mail spam has become a major concern to both organizations and employees. This article identifies and compares three different types of spamdetection approaches: list-based, content-scanning, and forged-e-mail detection. Because none of these approaches provides a comprehensive solution, a hybrid solution, which maximizes their collective strengths and minimizes their individual weaknesses, is proposed and tested with a prototype tool developed by the authors.
