Abstract

We determine the sedimentation velocity of a periodic array of drops through a viscous Newtonian fluid by extending an earlier analysis for the rigid particles. The results, which are given for the complete range of volume fraction c and the viscosity ratio K for the simple cubic, bodycentered cubic and face-centered cubic arrays, are in excellent agreement with the previously known results for the two limiting cases of the rigid spheres (K=∞) and the spherical bubbles (K=0) for all values of c and with an asymptotic expression for c≪1 for all K.
