Abstract
The concept of rhetorical coherence is central to the notion that rhetoric and conversation are interdependent discursive arts having a synchronic relationship. This essay presents basic research on the concept, an analysis of an actual welfare interview emersed in controversy. The research suggests a pentad of criteria necessary for the achievement of rhetorical coherence.
