Abstract

Resonance Raman spectra of butadiene obtained with radiation in the 230-218 nm range exhibit activity in combinations and overtones of a mode of bu symmetry. The pattern of the observed bands must be due to vibronic activity of this mode in a state of Ag symmetry. We conclude that the 2 1Ag state of butadiene lies between 5.4 and 5.8 eV, below the 1 1Bu state at 5.8 to 6.3 eV.
