Abstract
This text identifies a clear albeit moderate transition away from neoliberalism by the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. This transition is conceptualized as post-neoliber-al as opposed to anti-neoliberal. The notion of “post-neoliberalism” here captures: a) the strategic adoption of elements of neoliberal discourse and policy-making to, paradoxically, curve the effects of neoliberalism itself; and b) the practical negotiation of an anti-neoliberal agenda generated in the context of social movement dynamics, confronted, once in government, with the realities of a country that has been transformed by the neoliberal period in irreversible ways —at least in the immediate and short term.
