Abstract

The reaction of [(n-C4H9)4N]2[MO2O7] with meso-erythritol in methanol yields [(n-C4H9)4N]2[Mo2O5(eryth)]·0.5C4H10O4·H2O (I), a complex having the [Mo2O5]2+ core bound to a single erythritolate tetraanion. Reaction of I with chloroacetic acid in methanol results in a single protonation of the coordinated erythritolate ligand to give [(n-C4H9)4N][Mo2O5(Heryth)] (II). Crystal data: C40H85N2O12Mo2 (I): orthorhombic, space group Pbca, a = 16.651(3), b = 24.043(5), c = 24.935(5) Å, V = 9982.5(12) Å3, Z = 8, Dcalc = 1.30 g cm-3; 3625 reflections to give R = 0.0522. C20H43NO9Mo2 (II): monoclinic, space group P21/n, a = 21.827(4), b = 18.638(3), c = 29.188(4) Å, β = 108.3(1)°, V= 11269.9(15) Å3, Z = 16, Dcalc = 1.49 g cm-3; 5911 reflections to give R = 0.0687.
