Abstract

Different cluster operating systems (OS) for cluster computing with a generic design are discussed. The abstraction including protection boundaries, process/thread coordination, communication, and device handeling provided by current cluster OSs are examined. The current research issues related to clusters are explored. The technological aspects of the OS studied are: functionality; OS versus middleware ; Single system imaging (SSI); Hetrogeneity; User level communication facilities and optimized parallel input/output (I/O). A good combination of OS improvement and acqusition of relevent technology is suggested for a viable clustering option.
