Abstract

The variational principle of minimum entropy production (Glansdorff and Prigogine) provides the basis for this note. In the case of incompressible isothermal flows, the second variation of the functional is examined. The equations of motion are satisfied by the velocity field which maximizes the flux of relative helicity, under certain variational constraints.
