Of Gods and Monsters: Grief, Betrayal, and Failure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Research output: Chapter in Book/Entry/PoemChapter

Abstract

This chapter examines the Marvel Cinematic Universe in relation to the centrality of the idea of trust throughout its films. Trust is understood as an affective orientation that assumes the competence and goodwill of another and this feeling is crucial for superhero narratives. Emerging superheroes must learn to trust in their abilities, in their comrades, and the systems of law and order they protect. The Marvel Cinematic Universe interweaves darker elements into its narratives about trust with prominent elements of grief, betrayal, and failure that undermine and complicate the superhero genre.
