note = "Funding Information: This special issue ofInternational Interactions was first suggested by Hayward R. Alker, Jr. and Charles F. Hermann, immediately following a panel discussion at the 1988 International Studies Association meetings in St. Louis. Two subsequent meetings sponsored by the Data Directions in International Relations (DDIR) project reinforced the idea and offered convenient venues for many of the contributors to discuss their efforts and to offer one another valuable scholarly criticism. DDIR is centered at the Merriam Laboratory for Analytic Political Research at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. With financial support from the National Science Foundation (NSF SES-861057 and SES-9025130), DDIR has encouraged event data research generally, including the work presented in this special issue. I would like to thank Richard L. Merritt and Dina A. Zinnes in particular for their encouragement and occasional words of wisdom. Hayward R. Alker, Jr., himself a DDIR participant, provided detailed critical commentary on the essays included here. Copyright: Copyright 2016 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.",
