Abstract
An effective stress method of analysis is presented for evaluating the liquefaction resistance of saturated granular soils having an initial static shear strain/stress. Inclusion of static shear is of considerable importance in successfully predicting the liquefaction potential of hydraulic fill dams in which significant in-situ shear stresses/strains exist prior to an earthquake. State-of-the-art torsional simple shear test results for combined static and cyclic loading were used in the formulation of the stress-strain and pore pressure relationships utilized in the analysis.
