Abstract

The synthesis of a linear mesogen jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) of controlled molecular weight from poly[2,5-bis(4-butyl-benzoyl)oxy]styrene (PBBOS) is reported. This polymer is a side group LCP with mesogenic unit attached directly to the backbone in a side on mode to form a `mesogen jacketed LCP'. The steric hindrance of the rigid and bulky mesogenic unit stiffens the chain backbone leading to the semirigid rod main chain liquid crystalline behavior of the polymer. Controlled radical polymerization of this interesting monomer can result in a new polymer with narrow molecular weight distribution and unusual physical properties.
