Measurement of parity admixtures in nuclear forces in 180Hf and 159Tb

Abstract

The circular polarization of the 501 keV strongly hindered γ ray of 180Hf has been measured which yields a value Pγ = (-2.3 ± 0.6) × 10-3 and establishes the presence of a parity non-conserving nuclear force. A similar experiment for the 363 keV γ ray in 159Tb yielded Pγ = (-1 ± 5) × 10-4. The results were obtained with a fast-switching Compton polarimeter and phase-sensitive detection system.
