Abstract
A textbook which details the uses to which maps are put. Ten chapters cover the following themes: 1) an introduction on maps, and their main elements and roles; 2) photomaps and remotely sensed images, conventional and satellite; 3) landscape maps; 4) maps of the atmosphere, weather and climate; 5) population maps, data, symbols, uses and applications; 6) political maps; propaganda, boundary disputes; 7) municipal mapping, utilities, real estate; 8) old maps, their study, collection, preservation, and use in local history; 9) journalistic advertising and fictional maps; 10) computer cartography. Appendices give temperature conversions and sources of maps and cartographic information, as well as a glossary of terms. -after Authors
