Abstract
Late-life disability, broadly defined as difficulties in carrying out everyday tasks or participating in social activities due to a lack of " ... fit between individuals and their environments" , is a topic of intense and sustained interest. Under this broad definition disability is complex and multidimensional, and can be associated with any of numerous physiological, cognitive, or health conditions ranging from arthritis to advanced dementia. Disability is a key indicator of population health, and the population of people with disabilities is an important target group for monitoring and intervention. For example, the interagency Healthy People 2020 initiative includes several goals aimed at those with disabilities. These goals include enhancing opportunities for such people to be included in community and health promotion activities; to receive well-timed interventions and services; to interact with their environment without barriers; and to participate in everyday life.
