Abstract

The objective of this paper is to provide an overall assessment of the current state-of-the art in multimedia information technology, the future directions and the engineering challenges faced by the designers and researchers working in this area. We describe how the newly emerging networking and high performance storage technologies can provide unique opportunities for building interesting multimedia applications, which were unconceivable previously.
