Abstract

Observations are presented which suggest that an appreciable amount of the scattering of 4He from graphite is inelastic. The evidence is in the form of deviations from expected elastic scattering behavior, and in inconsistencies with some predictions of elastic scattering theory. Some of the work reported here was done with a liquid helium cooled nozzle beam. This allows beam energies as low as 3 meV and below, a factor of about 5 lower than previously used in atom-surface scattering.
