Inclusive Education as a Human Right and Slovakia's Accession to the European Union

Research output: Chapter in Book/Entry/PoemChapter

Abstract

While the Slovak Republic has made tremendous strides in accession to the European Union by amending its education legislation to afford certain disabled students greater access to the general curriculum, and in some cases access to the regular classroom, students labeled with mental disabilities, which includes 75% o fRoma students, are still denied meaningful educational opportunities, which leads to continued economic, social, and political oppression. Equal access, equal opportunity, equal protection, and equal participation are the roots of democratic society and it is through reducing inequalities in schools, through inclusive education, that Slovak Roma will erijoy meaningful membership in the social, political, and economic spheres of European (and global) society.
