Abstract
Despite efforts to promote social justice and inclusion in student affairs, faculty and students with minoritized identities continue to endure bias and discrimination in higher education, in general, and in the classroom, in particular. Faculty should acknowledge how bias and discrimination perpetuate oppression in student affairs. This can be challenging for faculty members who desire to create safe spaces or learning environments that allow students to engage in honest and respectful dialogue about controversial issues. Despite efforts to promote social justice and inclusion, faculty continue to wrestle with how to effectively address bias, discrimination, and oppression in graduate classrooms. Like many student affairs graduate preparation programs, department and academic program has focused on increasing the representation of faculty and students from underrepresented populations.
