Development of material information model to support the powder metallurgical product and processes

In order to support computer based modeling and process evaluation, development of an efficient material information model (MIM) is a necessity. The objective of this presented work is to analyze and develop such a MIM model which systematically categorizes material related information required for design, operation, and maintenance of powder metallurgical (PM) process. The proposed MIM model is well-structured. This conceptual data model could provide essential material information as a foundation for future studies on PM product design and material selection, for process simulation and optimization, as well as for many other design calculations including product and process sustainability analysis. In this paper, UML-based activity diagrams have been developed for each phase of the PM process, and then the roles of materials and their characteristics have been investigated to identify the importance of different materials properties and behaviors that must be modeled and made available in the proposed MIM model. One case example is used in the end to illustrate some possible uses of the proposed MIM model.
