Abstract
Work surface assemblies consisting of a particleboard core sandwiched by coated and uncoated wood veneer are frequently used in furniture systems. To better understand the moisture and VOC storage and transport through the different layers and whole work surface assembly, a 30mm thick assembly was investigated. Sorption isotherm and water vapour transmission of individual layers were measured and the results are compared. It was found that significant differences exist among the layers of the same work surface in water vapour diffusion resistance factor and sorption isotherm. The effect of such differences on the prediction of VOC and water vapour transport through the work surface are investigated using an analogy between VOC and water vapour transport, demonstrating the importance of accounting for the heterogeneous properties in such predictions.
