Abstract
The news is full of headlines describing the “rise of big data” and the consequent need for data scientists and big data professionals. Yet, as stewards of vast troves of printed and electronic information for generations, haven’t librarians always dealt with big data? The attention we give to this question has the potential to influence the future of the library as well as the long-term viability of librarianship as a profession.
