N2 - We examine the consequences of the B - L violating terms that occur in the most general superpotential of globally supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified models. We find that some of the coefficients in the B - L violating sector of the theory must be very small in order to satisfy the experimental bounds on neutrino masses and proton decay. Various symmetries which forbid or suppress the B - L violating terms are discussed.
