Abstract

Institutional analysts have had a long-standing interest in evaluating the designs and performance of institutional arrangements engaged by communities in natural resource governance. One of the most prominent approaches used to guide such evaluations is the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework. In addition to offering theoretical and conceptual guidance to support understanding of how institutions govern individual and collective action within institutional settings, the IAD framework also offers several analytical approaches that enable the systematic identification and classification of institutional statements that configure to form institutional arrangements. This chapter introduces one such approach, called the Institutional Grammar (IG). As part of this introduction, this chapter (i) provides a general overview of the IG; (ii) offers guidance on how it can be applied along with a set of qualitative, quantitative, and computational analysis techniques; and (iii) presents a brief review of select applications of the IG to the study of natural resource governance that exemplify the use and utility of employing the IG along with these various techniques.
