Research interests

Dr. Kelly Leahy conducts research on children, adolescents, and youth media and technology; she has a focus on media literacy, educational technology, entertainment media, digital games, television, and web content.

Leahy is currently Principal Investigator of a federally funded project entitled Media Literacy in the Metaverse. While at iCivics she was Principal Investigator of a five-year project funded by the Library of Congress and served as Project Director for two projects funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

She researched participatory media and cultural shifts related to emerging technologies at Harvard University and at MIT. Leahy has spoken on digital and game-based learning at conferences such as SXSW and the National Book Festival, and at universities ranging from American University to the London School of Economics. 

She has served on advisory boards and panels for the White House and the Library of Congress, among others. Her service work includes volunteering for national and local organizations, including four years on the Board of Directors for the National Association for Media Literacy Education. As a representative of NAMLE, Kelly was invited to be an Advisor for the Children’s Digital Media Alliance, American Association of Pediatrics which was responsible for implementing nationwide pediatric media guidelines in 2015.
