Professional Information
Bruce Kingma is a leading educator and researcher in entrepreneurship, economic development, online education, and the economics of information, library science, and nonprofit management. He is a Professor of Entrepreneurship with joint appointments in the School of Information Studies (iSchool) and Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. He is the former Associate Provost for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (2007-13) and the former Associate Dean of the iSchool (2000-07). Professor Kingma has held academic appointments at Syracuse University, the University of Texas at El Paso, Victoria University of Wellington, The University of British Columbia, Case Western Reserve University, The University at Albany, and Texas A&M University.
Professor Kingma is the founder of the award winning Syracuse Student Sandbox, an incubator, accelerator, and curriculum that helps students in Upstate New York start ventures. He is founder of the Global Sandbox, an innovative partnership between universities in China, India, Kenya, Ukraine, and Syracuse University that supports students from around the world starting global micro-multinational ventures.
Provost Kingma transformed entrepreneurship education at Syracuse University to focus on helping students, veterans, faculty, and community members start ventures. He worked with faculty across campus to create experiential, discipline-focused programs in entrepreneurship education. This Syracuse Model of experiential-focused entrepreneurship education increased annual enrollments in e-courses to over 7,500 students; raised over $30m in funding; resulted in over 100 new student ventures annually; and a top-ten national ranking in entrepreneurship education in Forbes, US News, The Princeton Review, Entrepreneur Magazine, Bloomberg, and Businessweek.
Provost Kingma led the Syracuse University Scholarship in Action initiatives connecting the campus to the community in economic development. Scholarship in Action programs raised over $350m in funding for The Near West Side Initiative, The Connective Corridor, and South Side Innovation Center ($100m+) helping residents revitalize disadvantaged neighborhoods; The Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems Innovation ($100m+) stimulating clean startups; The Institute for Veterans and Military Families ($100m+) and its award winning Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans; The Kauffman Campus Initiative ($30m+) supporting student starups; and The JP Morgan Chase Partnership ($30m) innovative research and curriculum in global enterprise technology.
Professor Kingma started The WISE—the first international consortium of universities in online education. In 2002, Syracuse University and 12 other universities from around the globe came together to share online courses, pedagogy, and training for online education in information science.
Professor Kingma has received numerous awards including
· The Deshpande Foundation Award for Excellence in Curriculum Innovation in Entrepreneurship
· The Leavey Award for Excellence in Free Enterprise Education from the Freedoms Foundation
· The Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers Award for Entrepreneurial Leadership
· The Community Entrepreneurial Leadership Award from Syracuse University
· The Excellence in Distance Education Award from the American Distance Education Consortium
· The Excellence in Online Education Award from the Sloan Foundation
· Academy of Management Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy Award (finalist).
Nine faculty and staff members that were part of Provost Kingma’s team received The Syracuse University Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence.
